Final Score: Pittsburgh 20 - West Virginia 21
Morgantown, VA (Sports Network) - Shawne Alston scored two rushing touchdowns to lead the West Virginia Mountaineers to a 21-20 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers in a Big East Conference tussle at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Geno Smith threw for 244 yards and one touchdown for WVU (8-3, 4-2 BigEast), while Tavon Austin hauled in 10 passes for 102 yards.
Tino Sunseri had little time all game, as the quarterback was sacked 10 times. Sunseri threw for 137 yards for Pitt (5-6, 3-3) and was intercepted once.
Zach Brown and Isaac Bennett scored on runs of one and six yards, respectively, giving the Panthers a 14-0 first quarter lead.
West Virginia finally found the end zone midway through the second stanza when Smith connected with Stedman Bailey for a 63-yard touchdown pass.
Kevin Harper's 30-yard field goal gave Pitt a 17-7 lead at the break.
Harper pushed Pitt's lead to 20-7 with a 27-yard boot early in the third frame.
West Virginia responded on its next drive, as the team used an eight-yard run by Alston to cut its deficit to 20-14.
Alston found the end zone again, this time the score came on a one-yard run and it gave the Mountaineers a one-point lead midway through the final frame. That would be all the scoring WVU would need, as the Mountaineers were able to hold on for the win.
