Georgia State tabs Curry as first head coach

Thu 12th, June 2008

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Georgia State has selected Bill Curry as the first football coach in the program's history.

The school held a news conference on Thursday to introduce Curry, an Atlanta native who last coached with Kentucky in 1996. He spent the past 11 years as a college football analyst with ESPN.

Georgia State launched its football program in April and will begin competition on the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) level in 2010. The Panthers will be a member of the Colonial Athletic Association and will play home games at the Georgia Dome.

"Our mission is to educate young people on and off the field while building a first-class program that makes our university proud, and who better to instill those ideals into the fabric of Georgia State football than Bill Curry?" said athletic director Mary McElroy.

Curry, who agreed to a five-year contract, has 17 years of experience as a coach on the Division I level with a record of 83-105-4. He coached at Georgia Tech, his alma mater, from 1980-86, where he compiled a mark of 31-43-4 and earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 1985 after a 9-2-1 campaign.

After three years at Alabama, which included a record of 26-10 with an SEC championship in 1989, Curry went to Kentucky. He coached the Wildcats from 1990-96, producing a record of 26-52 with a Peach Bowl appearance in 1993.

Curry graduated from Georgia Tech in 1965 and played 10 years in the NFL as a center with the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Colts, Houston Oilers and Los Angeles Rams. He played in three Super Bowls, winning two, and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
