Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - James Madison won its showdown with Richmond 38-31 on Saturday to retain the No. 1 ranking in the Sports Network FCS Top-25 poll, but the Dukes were one point short of being a unanimous No. 1.
JMU (6-1) received 105 of 106 first-place votes and 2,649 total points out of a possible 2,650.
Appalachian State (4-2), a 35-24 winner over Samford on the road in Southern Conference play, remained second with 2,507 points. The Mountaineers drew the one other first-place vote.
Elon soared to its highest ranking ever in the poll at No. 3, following a 27-23 victory over then-No. 21 The Citadel. Wofford rose from eighth to fourth by drubbing Tennessee-Chattanooga 56-7, to give the SoCon three teams in the top four.
Cal Poly climbed from seventh to fifth in an off week, while Northern Iowa used a 31-17 victory over Illinois State to jump from 10th to sixth. Villanova also had a two-spot rise during a bye week, moving from ninth to seventh.
Montana's 19-3 win at Eastern Washington caused the Grizzlies to bounce back into the top 10 after a one-week absence. The Grizzlies rose from 12th to eighth.
Richmond fell from fifth to ninth with the loss to JMU and Massachusetts survived an upset bid from Northeastern and climbed from 13th to 10th. Those two teams give the Colonial Athletic Association four teams in the top 10.
Two teams that plummeted begin the next 10. New Hampshire fell from fourth to 11th with a 38-34 loss to William & Mary, while McNeese State stumbled from third to 12th with a 45-42 defeat by Texas State.
Making up the rest of the second 10 are Central Arkansas at No. 13, followed by Liberty, Western Illinois, Southern Illinois, Northern Arizona, Weber State, Furman and North Dakota State.
The rest of the poll has South Dakota State at No.21, followed by Tennessee State, Jacksonville State, The Citadel and Hampton. Tennessee State reentered the poll at No. 22 following a two-week absence and Hampton moved into the top-25 for the first time.
