The Colts went somewhat under the radar last year because of the historic season put together by their AFC
rivals, the New England Patriots. Lost amid New England's unbeaten regular season was the fact that the Colts were just a few plays away from going unbeaten themselves. They let a 10-point lead slip away in the last four minutes at home against the Patriots and lost despite dominating most of the game. The following week they came out sluggish against the Chargers and yet still would have won if not for a missed last-second field goal. Their third and final loss came in the last week when they trotted out their junior varsity squad against a Titans team that had to win in order to reach the playoffs.
In other words, the Colts amassed perhaps the least heralded 13-3 season in NFL history. There's no reason they shouldn't be heard from again this year. Under the quiet leadership of coach Tony Dungy and seemingly timeless excellence of Peyton Manning, the Colts have established themselves as the annual favorite in this division. This should not change this season. The Colts have long ago shed their "soft" image and replaced it with one that's just as dominant on the defensive side of the ball as it is on offense. The Colts had the best points-per-game defense last year (16.4) and ranked third in yards allowed (280). Hard-hitting safety Bob Sanders has been the face and the force behind the Colts' renewed commitment to defense.
Manning and the offense will benefit from the return of receiver Marvin Harrison from injury; he and Reggie Wayne represent the league's most dynamic receiving duo. Joseph Addai has proved to be an elite NFL back with his lighting speed and strength, and he will be helped by the return of Dominic Rhodes, who returns after one ill-fated season in Oakland. The Colts also got a potential steal late in the draft by grabbing running back Mike Hart out of Michigan, adding more depth to an already-rich backfield.
One year after winning the Super Bowl, the Colts became an afterthought amid the media craze surrounding New England's season. Their loss to the Patriots derailed their season and left them seething at the missed opportunity. Expect this team to bounce back. Although the Colts went just 9-7 against the spread last year and lost their penchant to cover the big number at home, it says here that they will get back to rewarding their backers big-time this year, and they remain one of the best road teams and values in the NFL. Even though betting them to win this division comes with laying a price, it should be well worth it because their nearest competitor, Jacksonville, stills seems to lack enough firepower to overtake them and win the division. The Colts are worth a look at AFC and Super Bowl futures, especially the Super Bowl given their 7/1 odds. It's also hard to imagine the Colts not reaching at least 12 wins and cashing in on their win total prop for the season.
