The Miami Dolphins have fired Defensive Coordinator, Paul Pasqualoni, beginning the process of rebuilding their defensive coaching staff.
Pasqualoni served as the Dolphins' Defensive Coordinator for the past two seasons. The unit finished 22nd in total yards allowed, with an average of 349 yards per game, and tied for 25th in total points allowed, 24.4 per game, this past season.
The totals were major setbacks from the 2008 season when the 11-5 Dolphins were ranked 15th in total defense after giving up 329 yards per game, and finished 9th in points per game with 19.8.
The Dolphins' defense was ripped by the pass, where the unit allowed 234.6 yards through the air and a total of 26 touchdowns.
The Dolphins (7-9) were last in the league in average per passing attempt, 8.2 yards, and average per completion, 13.3 yards. Their defense was tied with Detroit for allowing the most plays of forty yards or more, with seventeen.
Opposing quarterbacks produced a 86.9 rating in 2009. Only thirteen teams allowed a higher total and only one made the playoffs (Minnesota).
Ricky Williams spoke to WQAM during their Monday night radio show. "I am shocked. It seemed like he was one of their boys. I believe our defense at the worst was a little inconsistent."
Pasqualoni spent fourteen seasons as the head coach at Syracuse before going to the NFL. He coached with Sparano in Dallas for 2 seasons before the two of them moved to Miami. Initially, he signed a 2 year deal that simply was not extended.
Coach Tony Sparano said in a released statement, "I want to thank Paul for his services to this team, and I would like to wish him the best.%u201D
The firing of Pasqualoni, who specialized at coaching linebackers, means there are 3 vacancies on the coaching staff.
George Edwards left his position as the inside linebacker coach to become the Defensive Coordinator at the University of Florida, and outside linebackers coach, Jim Reid, left to take the same position at the University of Virginia.
Former Browns coach Romeo Crennel and former Jets coach Al Groh, can easily fill the defensive coordinator role for the Dolphins.
Groh, who was fired from Virginia after the 2009 season, is considered a perfect target. However, he may be joining Georgia Tech's staff as per the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Crennel coached for the Browns from the 2005-2008, and is the front runner for the Defensive Coordinator job for the Kansas City Chiefs. Even the Giants have shown interest in hiring Crennel for the same position. Last summer, Crennel spent a couple of days to visit the Dolphins.
Groh coached the linebackers for Parcells with the Giants during the 1989-1990 season and for the Jets in 1997-99. He was also the Patriots Defensive Coordinator for Parcells from 1993-96 and the Jets head coach in 2000 when Parcells was the general manager of the team.
It is also probable that Todd Bowles, the secondary coach, will serve as the assistant head coach for the Dolphins.
