With the Indianapolis Colts' home crowd on their feet, counting down, three . . . two . . . one
and glitter guns and the air filled with white and blue sparkles, head coach Jim Caldwell stood in front, shoulder to shoulder with quarterback Peyton Manning.
Where else would you want to be?
Caldwell said, "He performs his best in the most difficult situations," referring to Manning after the Colts victory vs. the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game. "As we faced the best defense that we have faced this year, he took his game to another level."
Manning completed 26-39 passes for 377 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions vs. the #1 NFL defense. He brought the Colts (16-2) back from an eleven point deficit. As the 4 time league Most Valuable Player strutted his stuff.
The next opponent will come February 7th at Super Bowl XLIV. The Colts are departing to Miami; back to Sun Life Stadium, where they won Super Bowl XLI in 2006. This time they will meet the New Orleans Saints, who beat the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in overtime, Sunday night in the NFC Championship Game.
On Sunday, the Colts made three mistakes that put them down 17-6 with 2 minutes left in the first half. Manning thought of the 2006 season. He said, "This actually reminded me of our game vs. New England."
Where the Colts trailed 21-3 late in the first half that day. They came back to win 38-34. This time, throughout the game, with a crowd of 67,650 roaring and the Jets reeling, the Colts had five possessions and scored on four of them. Manning was 17-23 for 236 yards and 3 touchdowns on those 4 scoring drives.
"Just incredible," said Jim Irsay, owner of Colts, while hugging the Lamar Hunt Trophy. "The momentum we lost being down eleven and him carrying us back. It is a total team effort, but we knew Peyton had to get us going. Throwing for 380 yards vs. the best defense in the league when everything is on the line, what an implausible performance."
Thus were those Colts wide receivers, Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon.
