NFL: Freeney's health becomes an issue

Odds & News | Webmaster ( Tue 2nd, February 2010 )

Effectiveness, even availability, of the Colts' Defensive End, Dwight Freeney, is questionable for Super Bowl XLIV due to ankle injury.

This could cause anguish among the Indianapolis Colts and is the unanticipated story line these days leading up to the Super Bowl this Sunday.

The Colts' spokesman said that their all time sack leader suffered a "3rd degree, low ankle basketball sprain'' on January 24th, during the AFC Championship victory over the New York Jets. Craig Kelley mentioned that night, "We anticipate him being questionable for the Super Bowl."

In an interview with NFL Networkduring Sunday night's Pro Bowlin Sun Life Stadium, Reggie Wayne, the Colts wide receiver said, "Dwight told me that he will be ready.'' The residue to be seen for the 3rd degree sprain is worse and generally involves a ruptured or torn ligament.

Dr. Mark D. Miller posted on an Internet site that a 3rd degree sprain "is the most unstable and the most serious. The ligament group could completely tear, as a result of ankle instability.'' Often Surgery is required.

Miller wrote, "Treatment, generally involves the ankle to be in a cast or walking support for approximately 6 weeks. The degree of the sprain needs 8-12 months to permit the ligament to suitably heal."

Freeney didn't practice last week before he arrived to South Florida on Friday to maximize his treatment. One source said, when speaking about Freeney's condition, "it is tough to guess if he will be 100%'' when the Colts meet the New Orleans Saints at Sun Life Stadium.

"I am sure he will give it a go,'' according to the source, dilapidated to elaborate on nature of injury. Freeney has the team record of 84 sacks during his 8 year career. His game relies on speed, to get off the ball in nanoseconds. His recognizable spin move requires him to plant the right foot and turn with a pass rush move. A sprain will probably not allow him to do that.

Freeney was choosen to his 5th Pro Bowl, but wasn't at the stadium on Sunday night.

The NFL required that the Pro Bowl players from the Saints and Colts to attend the all star game. After finishing their final workout in Indianapolis, Sunday afternoon, quarterback Peyton Manning, Wayne, center Jeff Saturday, tight end Dallas Clark, and defensive end Robert Mathis got on a charter flight and arrived at Sun Life Stadium on time for the pregame ceremonies.

Neither Manning nor Clark shed much light on Freeney's situation.
