As expected, the Jets will extend the contracts of wide receiver Brad Smith and safety Eric Smith, team general manager, Mike Tannenbaum said.
Both players had career years last season and are the core of the Jets' special teams. Both are in their fourth season and are restricted free agents as long as there is no new cooperative bargaining agreement.
They join wide receiver, Braylon Edwards, running back, Leon Washington and backup quarterback, Kellen Clemens as the restricted free agents that the teams plans on extending.
Brad Smith, a fourth round pick out of Missouri in 2006, broke through in 2009 after the average seasons. He returned a second half kickoff for a franchise record 106 yards in a Week 16 victory over the Colts, rushed for a career high 92 yards on 4 carries in a Week 17, playoff clinching win over the Bengals and completed a 45 yard pass to wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery from the wildcat formation in the AFC Championship game against the Colts.
Eric Smith, a third round pick out of Michigan State in 2006, started 4 games last season, two in the place of benched Kerry Rhodes. After three unsatisfactory seasons, he found a match with aggressive head coach Rex Ryan and his blitz happy coverages. He finished with 34 tackles, 6 pass deflections and 1 interception. He was also a standout on special teams making 25 tackles.
