How much does it cost for a pass rusher?
Several teams like the Bears are pondering that question as the beginning of free agency creeps up.
As the gate opens and the horses come charging out at 11 pm on Thursday, as many as 7 teams can be headed for the direction of Julius Peppers.
The Bears, Eagles and Redskins will be competing for his services and the other possibilities are the Patriots, Giants, Chiefs and Browns.
As free spending as the Redskins are, it is possible that all of other horses will fall off swiftly.
An NFL source predicted a price tag for Peppers that could be in the range of $18 million a year, with $40 million guaranteed. That may be on the high side, but it is hard to make up a contract that will not be a market setting deal.
Last year, the Redskins gave Albert Haynesworth a deal which averages $12 million per year, with $41 million guaranteed. Peppers' value is higher than Haynesworth's, however to think that NFL teams are perhaps more conservative in their spending this year along with the possibility of a lockout for 2011. While teams will have cutbacks, it is likely that the cutbacks will not apply to must-haves like Peppers.
Thus, can Peppers be worth $18 million a year? As he made that last year as a franchise player for the Panthers, however that was a one year deal. Can he be worth $15 million every year on a multi-year contract? He probably will be paid more than $1 million per sack, since he has averaged a little more than 10 sacks per season throughout his career and never has had more than 14.5 sacks in a season.
The best Peppers comparison is Jared Allen. As the Vikings signed him in 2007, they signed him to a deal, that averages $12.2 million a year and would pay him $31 million in guaranteed money. Allen had 14.5 sacks in each of his 2 seasons with Minnesota. Whoever signs Peppers will be fortunate to get the same type of production.
The good news is that Peppers has the ability to do so.
"He's a better athlete and has superior abilities" one NFC general manager said. "However he does not have near the motor and does not play as hard down for down and week to week."
The general manager even pointed out that Allen was 26 years old during his first season with the Vikings and Peppers will be 30.
So far, Peppers has hardly showed any signs of aging. He plays similar to a young pup.
