NFL: Tomlinson signs 2 years, $5.1 Million deal with Jets

There is another "LT" comings to New York to play football. 17 years after Hall of Fame line backer, Lawrence Taylor, retired from the Giants, future Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson is joining the New York Jets.

A day after returning back to his home in San Diego, following a free agent recruiting visit with the Jets, the former Chargers' star chose the Jets over the Vikings, who aggressively recruited him as well.

Tomlinson's agent and the Jets, Tom Condon, had a deal on Sunday night, as per The Associated Press.

Condon told the AP, "He wanted to go to a team which he thought had a chance to compete for the championship. He wanted to go some place where he had a chance to play a significant role, also with the Jets he was going to be familiar with their offensive system."

Tomlinson decided on a 2 year, $5.1 million contract with $500,000 in incentives. Tomlinson had an appointment with the Vikings in Minnesota a week prior than his meeting with the Jets at their New Jersey facility.

The Saints and Eagles reportedly were interested in Tomlinson, but he opted not to visit either, instead to choose between the Vikings and Jets after consulting with his wife, LaTorsha.

Tomlinson's decision was first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune, and also means that the Jets added veteran assurance to a backfield that already has Shonn Greene, in his 2nd NFL season, and Leon Washington a free agent who is recovering from one broken right leg.

Tomlinson turns 31 in June, and his production has declined during the last two seasons. Last season was his worst season as a pro with 730 yards rushing, a 3.3 yards per rush average and 12 Touch Downs. He's a talented receiver out of the backfield, having caught 530 career passes, which means he will probably be used as a 3rd down weapon with Washington, if he stays.

Still the Jets envision Greene as their starting back.

Although Tomlinson's career and character are unquestioned, the release of Thomas Jones at the beginning of free agency brought up questions.

Apparently they did not want to pay Jones $5.8 million this season.

It is possible that the Jets just felt that Jones at a more limited role would not be as effective as he was as a featured back.
