Alameda, CA (Sports Network) - The Oakland Raiders signed running back Darren McFadden, the No. 4 overall pick in this year's draft, to a six-year, $60 million contract on Friday.
McFadden, who played at Arkansas, was a two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up during his three seasons with the Razorbacks, accumulating more than 2,300 all-purpose yards while accounting for 17 touchdowns.
"For me, I am very happy to have it out of the way because I want to be in training camp, I want to be out there practicing and learning the plays," said McFadden. "Missing a day of training camp is like missing a week of college practices. I want to thank my family for coming out and supporting me and the whole Raiders organization for drafting me and I am going to make them very proud."
Questions arose in the weeks leading up to the draft about McFadden's character because of a variety of off-field issues. Regardless, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Little Rock native should provide the Raiders, 4-12 in 2007, with an explosive offensive weapon.
"This is a very exciting day for us as an organization," said Raiders coach Lane Kiffin. "A number of things go into that. As you go back to the day we drafted Darren, we knew that it was extremely important for us to get this done as soon as we could. The last thing we wanted with Darren, because of our ideas with him, was to go into a holdout and have him miss any time in training camp. This shows a lot about Darren and that he felt the same way that we did."
