Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Brett Favre officially joined the New York Jets Thursday in a press conference before the team's preseason game in Cleveland.
Favre was traded to the Jets for a 2009 conditional draft pick. According to NFL.com, the Packers will receive a fourth-round draft pick in 2009 and the selection would turn into a third-round pick if Favre plays in 50 percent of the plays this season, a second-rounder if he plays in 70 percent and the Jets make the playoffs, or a first-round pick if he plays in 80 percent and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl.
"The last 24 hours have been crazy, the whole offseason has been bizarre, but it is what it is. I am a member of the Jets I'm excited about the opportunity," Favre said. "I was told by numerous people to at least talk to (Jets general manager) Mike (Tannenbaum) and as I told him today...I didn't talk to him until 24 hours ago because I knew I would be convinced."
Favre was reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Sunday after retiring in early March in a tear-filled press conference. He was added to the Packers' roster on Monday, but did not practice with the club.
Favre leaves Green Bay as the NFL's all-time leader in most major passing categories -- touchdowns (442), yards (61,655), completions (5,377) and attempts (8,758) -- and his 253-game starting streak remains intact. By playing 16 seasons in a Packers uniform (1992-2007), he matches Bart Starr (1956-71) for the longest tenure in team history among his 30 team records. Now he brings those startling credentials to the Jets.
"I always wanted to be a Packer," Favre added. "I think I'll always be a Packer. People will say it was the best 16 years. I think it was made clear this offseason that they were moving forward -- that's ok -- it's time for me to move forward."
