Pierzynski powers White Sox past Cubs

Sun 20th, May 2007

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - A.J. Pierzynski belted a grand slam as the Chicago White Sox bested the Chicago Cubs, 10-6, in the finale of a three-game set at Wrigley Field.

It was the sixth career grand slam for the White Sox's catcher who finished 2- for-5 in the game. "They love me here," Pierzynski said. "It's a fun series. In Chicago, all the eyes are on this one game. They don't care about anything else. It's why you play this game -- to play in front of crowds like this, in stadiums like this where everything matters." Jermaine Dye also homered for the White Sox, who avoided a sweep with the win. Rob Mackowiak and Juan Uribe had two RBI apiece for the ChiSox. Nick Masset (2-1) allowed two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings in his first major league start to earn the win for the ChiSox. Aramis Ramirez had a three-run home run for the Cubs, who have lost three of five games. Daryle Ward and Jacque Jones had an RBI each. Carlos Zambrano (4-4) was touched for seven runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings en route to the loss. The Cubs grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first. Angel Pagan walked on four pitches and swiped second before coming around on Ward's RBI single. The White Sox quickly answered with a pair of runs in the second. The Pale Hose loaded the bases on a Paul Konerko walk and consecutive singles by Mackowiak and Joe Crede. Uribe then came through with a two-run single to make it 2-1. The White Sox added another run in third when Dye ripped a two-out solo home run, his ninth of the year. The Cubs tried to claw back in it in the sixth after Alfonso Soriano scored when Andrew Sisco uncorked a wild pitch. But, the White Sox put things away with a two-out, seven-run rally in the seventh. Uribe was plunked to start things and moved up a base when pinch-hitter Jim Thome walked. Darin Erstad then slapped an RBI single to left to make it 4-2. Tadahito Iguchi then walked to load the bases before Pierzynski drilled a 0-1 pitch over the wall in center for his grand slam. The inning wasn't over, however. Dye walked and moved to third on Konerko's double before Mackowiak capped the inning with an RBI single to give the White Sox a comfortable 10-2 lead. The Cubs made in interesting with a four-run eighth against David Aardsma. Ryan Theriot singled and moved to second when Pagan walked. After Soriano fanned, Ramirez belted a three-run shot to right. Mark DeRosa followed with a double to right and Jones came through with a two-out RBI single to draw the Cubs within four, 10-6. "It's hard to score seven runs with two outs and nobody on," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella.
