Lightning aim to continue dominance of Coyotes

Thu 8th, January 2009

(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Lightning will try to extend their winning streak over the Phoenix Coyotes to seven games tonight, as the two teams square off in the desert at Jobing.com Arena.

These two teams last met on February 13, 2007 in Tampa. The Lightning posted a 5-3 win to defeat the Coyotes franchise for a sixth straight time as well as for the eighth time in the last 12 meetings.

Tampa Bay hasn't lost to Phoenix since February 13, 2001 and has outscored the franchise 24-7 over its series winning streak. The Lightning have also won three straight in Phoenix, outscoring the club 10-1 in that time, with their last loss in the desert coming on December 14, 2000.

The Lightning resume a five-game road trip tonight and began the swing with a 4-1 win in Atlanta on Sunday. Seven of Tampa's 11 wins on the season have come as the road club.

Martin St. Louis registered two goals to help the Lightning move past the Thrashers in the Southeast standings with a 4-1 victory. Tampa and its 32 points are now one ahead of basement-dwelling Atlanta.

Mike Smith made 27 saves, while Steve Eminger and Ryan Malone also scored for Tampa Bay, which snapped a three-game losing streak while winning for the third time in its last four games on the road.

Phoenix enters this test having been shut out in back-to-back games and in three of its last five contests. The Coyotes were blanked 4-0 by Los Angeles on December 27 and after back-to-back wins against Colorado and the New York Islanders, they were shut out by Anaheim, 2-0, on Sunday.

Two days later the Coyotes hosted Chicago, but failed to get any of their 22 shots past Blackhawks goaltender Cristobal Huet in a 6-0 setback.

Mikael Tellqvist started the game in net for Phoenix, but was pulled after the first period, as he allowed four goals on 13 shots. Ilya Bryzgalov finished the game between the pipes and allowed two goals on 28 shots.

Ed Jovanovski is questionable for tonight's game after he suffered a cut above his left eye with 9:32 to play on Tuesday during a brief scrum with Chicago's Matt Walker.

Shane Doan will try to jump start Phoenix's offense tonight just one day after he was named to the Western Conference All-Star team. Doan leads the Coyotes with 18 goals, 20 assists and 38 points.

Phoenix is 13-6-2 as the home team this year and will wrap a three-game residency versus Dallas on Saturday.
