United within two of Liverpool after Rooney's early goal

Manchester, England (Sports Network) - Wayne Rooney scored less than one minute into the match and Manchester United held on for a 1-0 win over Wigan at Old Trafford on Wednesday, moving United into second place and just two points behind leaders Liverpool.

The win may come at a cost for the Red Devils, however, as Rooney limped off the field shortly after his goal with a hamstring injury, and was replaced by Carlos Tevez.

Wigan recovered well from the early blow and played United very evenly over the remaining 89 minutes, but a stubborn United defense was once again the story as the team recorded its ninth straight clean sheet in Premiership play.

It took less than one minute for the game to spring to life as Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh off his FIFA World Player of the Year award, crossed into the area for Michael Carrick, who flicked the ball on for an easy tap-in from close range for Rooney.

The rest of the game was tight with both sides putting few shots on target, although Wigan looked just as dangerous as the hosts throughout.

Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov both sent efforts sailing just wide of the net in the second half, but the result was in doubt right up until the final whistle, and Wigan's run of six wins in seven matches came to an end.
