Eight set to go in San Rafael Stakes

Wed 14th, January 2009

Arcadia, CA (Sports Network) - Southern California three-year-olds begin their quest toward the Santa Anita Derby and Run for the Roses on Saturday with the running of the $100,000 San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita. The one-mile race has attracted seven colts and one gelding.

Making his stakes debut will be highly regarded Brother Keith in his second career start. Brother Keith will be ridden by Garrett Gomez from post three for owners Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, and trainer Bobby Frankel.

"You gotta try him someplace," Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel said.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Square Eddie has drawn post six with Rafael Bejarano in the saddle. Trained by Doug O'Neill, Square Eddie began his career in England and won the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland prior to finishing second to Midshipman in the Juvenile on October 25.

"He's doing fantastic. He looks great, full of energy," ONeill said from Hollywood Park. "We gave him 83 days between the Breeders' Cup and the San Rafael, so he's been freshened and he looks ready to roll. We have so much confidence in the horse. We think we have one of the top three right now, so I guess that's all that matters. Saturday's a big day and we're hoping for a big effort and see him come out of it good."

Square Eddie registered a 4 3/4 length victory in the Futurity for owner J. Paul Reddam. The winner was sent off at 9-1 in the 11 horse field.

Here is the complete field for the San Rafael Stakes in post position order: The Pamplemousse, Alex Solis; Fiddlers Afleet, Michael Baze; Brother Keith, Gomez; Ryehill Dreamer, Mike Smith; Papa Clem, Tyler Baze; Square Eddie, Bejarano; Charlie's Moment, Joel Rosario and Feisty Suances, David Flores.

The San Rafael has a scheduled post-time of 6:36 p.m. (et).

In 2006 Brother Derek won the one-mile test on his way to winning the Santa Anita Derby.
