Orton doesn't practice, Simms primed to start

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton failed to see the practice field for a third straight day Friday, meaning Chris Simms will likely make his first start in over three years Sunday in Denver's Week 11 showdown with San Diego.

Orton was held out of practice this week after severely spraining his left ankle late in the second quarter of last week's loss to Washington. He did not return and Simms took over, although, he completed just 3-of-13 passes for 13 yards with an interception.

The last time Simms started under center was Week 3 of the 2006 season when he suffered internal bleeding and had to have emergency surgery to have his spleen removed following a nasty hit. The injury cost him the rest of that season and all of the next.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Brandon Marshall (neck) looks ready to go after taking in full reps for a second consecutive day Friday. He was held out on Wednesday.

Running back Correll Buckhalter (knee) returned to the field for a full practice Friday after sitting Thursday. He's officially listed as probable along with Marshall.

Starting right tackle Ryan Harris (toe) will miss a third straight game while running back Lamont Jordan (back) will sit for a fifth straight. Safety Josh Barrett (hamstring) is questionable after missing the Washington game.

Denver started the season 6-0, but has since dropped three straight to fall into a tie with the Chargers for first place in the AFC West.
