Metairie, LA (Sports Network) - The New Orleans Saints waived veteran kicker John Carney on Tuesday.
The Saints signed Carney as a free agent prior to the season after the NFL suspended Garrett Hartley for the first four games of the 2009 campaign for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
The 45-year-old Notre Dame product was the Saints' starting kicker for the first 11 games, connecting on 13-of-17 field goals while missing two of 52 extra-point tries.
Hartley took over the reins as starting kicker in Week 13, and his game-winner in overtime against Washington that same week followed by his connecting on all three of his field goal attempts the past two games has apparently given him the job for the remainder of the season.
Carney has connected on 82.4 percent of his field goals throughout his career, ranking third in NFL history with 2,044 points and 473 field goals in stints with the Giants, Tampa Bay, San Diego, New Orleans, Jacksonville and Kansas City.
Also on Tuesday, the Saints waived cornerback Marcus McCauley while signing safety Herana-Daze Jones and fullback Kyle Eckel.
