Final Score: Oakland 23 - Kansas City 8
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Darren McFadden rushed for a career-best 164 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and Sebastian Janikowski booted a franchise-record 56-yard field goal, as Oakland shut down Kansas City, 23-8, in a Week 2 matchup from Arrowhead Stadium.
JaMarcus Russell completed only 6-of-17 passes for 55 yards for the Raiders (1-1), who won the game amidst a report that Raiders owner Al Davis is ready to fire head coach Lane Kiffin, as early as Monday.
"That's not my decision," stated Kiffin. "I'm excited at the way our staff and players prepared this week. If I'm here, we'll do the same next week."
Michael Bush picked up 90 yards on 16 carries and his first career touchdown and Justin Fargas gained 43 yards on nine rushes for Oakland before leaving the contest in the second quarter with a groin injury.
Tyler Thigpen was subpar in defeat, going 14-of-33 for 151 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Chiefs (0-2), who have dropped 11 consecutive games. Kansas City dropped nine in a row to end last season, and have not won since a 12-10 triumph at Oakland on October 21, 2007.
Damon Huard started the game but completed two passes for 17 yards before leaving with a head injury after the first quarter. Dwayne Bowe caught six balls for 90 yards and Tony Gonzalez added a TD catch.
Despite being pinned at their own five-yard-line for their second possession of the second half, the Raiders upped their lead to 13-0 when McFadden rolled into the end zone on a 19-yard run. The fleet back spurred the quick drive by breaking off a 21-yard gain on the first play and later rattled off a 50-yard run into KC territory.
Janikowski nailed a 40-yarder with 6:53 left in the contest for a 16-0 Oakland edge. The visitors ate up more than seven minutes of the clock on the 11-play, 63-yard drive.
Thigpen's two-yard touchdown pass to Gonzalez finally put the Chiefs on the board with 4:04 to go, and the successful conversion pass to Mike Cox made it an eight-point game.
On the next play following the kickoff, Bush fumbled and Bernard Pollard recovered for KC on its own 36. The drive was for naught, as Thigpen threw into the hands of Oakland's Kirk Morrison on 3rd-and-19.
Bush concluded the ensuing drive with a 32-yard rumble for a score coming 51 seconds before the end of the contest to lock up the Oakland victory.
Oakland got on the board when Janikowski was true from 56 yards with 5:13 left in the first quarter. The successful make was also a career-best for the Florida State product and nine-year veteran.
On the following series, Huard saw his pass to Devard Darling bounce off the receiver and into the hands of Tyvon Branch, who returned the ball to the KC nine. After the Raiders drive stalled, Janikowski hit from 25 yards out for a 6-0 game.
After Huard left with his injury, Thigpen got the nod under center but did not fare better and Kansas City was held scoreless to the break.
"He was put in a tough spot," said Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards of Thigpen. "I thought he did a good job in the two-minute at the end where he took the team down and made some throws. But it's a work in progress and it puts a burden on him when you can't run the ball. That's too difficult for anybody."
