Gillis leads Players Cup by one

Sat 27th, June 2009

Bridgeport, WV (Sports Network) - Tom Gillis carded a six-under 66 Saturday to take a one-shot lead after three rounds of the Nationwide Tour Players Cup.

Gillis, who will go for his first tour win on Sunday, finished 54 holes at 13- under-par 203.

Kyle Reifers (64) and Jeff Gove (68) share second place at minus-12 at Pete Dye Golf Club. Won Joon Lee (64) and Seung-su Han (66) are tied for fourth at 11-under-par 205.

Second-round leader David Peoples managed an even-par 72 and dipped into a share of sixth at minus-10.

Gillis was on fire right from the start. He poured in three straight birdies from the second, but his run ended with a bogey on the fifth. Gillis bounced right back with a birdie on the par-five sixth.

After three straight pars, Gillis birdied No. 11 to move to 11-under. He faltered to a double-bogey on the par-three 13th, but came back with four birdies in the final five holes to take the lead.

Gillis was in the clubhouse at minus-13, then sat and watched the final two groups finish. No one could catch him so Gillis will enter the final round one shot ahead of Reifers and Gove.

"I made a pact with myself this week that I wasn't going to let things get me too up or too down," Gillis admitted. "The previous three or four tournaments I was pushing too hard. I wasn't getting too much out of my rounds and so I have been trying to stay loose and let it go."

Reifers, the 2006 Chattanooga Classic winner, flew up the leaderboard with six birdies in the first eight holes to jump to 10-under.

Around the turn, he tripped to a bogey on No. 11, but birdied three of four holes from the 14th to get to 12-under.

Gove birdied three of the first five holes, but parred his next nine holes. After tripping to a bogey on the par-three 16th, he came right back with an eagle on the par-five 17th to end in a share of second.

Peoples was joined in a share of sixth place by Ron Whittaker (68), Jhonattan Vegas (65) and Chris Baryla (68).
