Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Michael Every fired a course-record, nine- under 63 Friday to grab a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Nationwide Tour Championship.
Every completed 36 holes at 11-under-par 133. His second-round 63 bettered the course record of 64 that Michael Sim set on Thursday.
"Anytime you get a course record, it is a good feeling. I don't have too many of those," Every stated.
Every, who has just three top-10 finishes this year, needs a solo third-place finish or better to earn his PGA Tour card for 2010. The top 25 on the money list earn their PGA Tour cards for next year and Every currently stands 49th on that list.
Sim, the tour's money leader, managed a two-under 70 and is tied for second place at minus-10. He was joined there by Cameron Percy, who posted a seven- under 65 on Friday. Fabian Gomez (65), who is 30th on the money list, is alone in fourth at nine-under-par 135.
The 25-year-old Every flew out of the gate with six birdies over the first seven holes to jump to minus-nine. He gave one stroke back with a bogey on the par-four 10th.
Every got that stroke back with a birdie on the 13th. He kicked off his third run of three straight birdies on the 15th. On 16, he drained an 18-footer to take the lead as Sim tripped to a bogey at the 12th.
Every made it three in a row with an up-and-down birdie on the par-four 17th. He parred the last at Ralston Creek Course at the Daniel Island Club to lead by one.
"I'm putting cross-handed now," Every explained of the improvement in his game. "I've been working really hard, so maybe this week it will pay off."
Sim is already a member of the PGA Tour thanks to the automatic promotion he received for three tour wins this season. He will also extend his Nationwide Tour money record with his earnings this week.
After finishing his round, Sim was serenaded by the fans behind the 18th green. They were singing "Happy Birthday" as he turned 25 on Friday.
"They sung for me out there on 18, so that kind of made the day a little bit better," Sim said of the crowd behind the final green. "I don't get home (to Australia) as much to spend time with my friends."
Sim holed out for eagle on the second and came right back with a birdie on the third to jump to 11-under.
After eight straight pars, Sim stumbled to a bogey on the 12th. He bounced back with a birdie on No. 13, but bogeyed 15 and 16 to fall to minus-nine. Sim got up and down for birdie on 18 to share second.
"I was going to hit eight-iron, but went back to a three-quarter seven-iron and it went in," Sim said of his eagle at two. "Then I hit a good shot into the next and made birdie there, but I struggled off the tee today. I lost a little confidence there. It was nice to birdie the last."
Percy birdied four of the first six holes to move to minus-seven. He birdied the 11th, but stumbled to a double-bogey on the 12th. Percy closed with four birdies in the last five holes to end at 10-under.
Josh Teater (67) and Jerod Turner (64) share fifth place at eight-under-par 136. Won Joon Lee (67) is a stroke back at minus-seven. Lee needs a big week as he stands 47th on the money list.
