Quinn wins by two in Panama

Sun 28th, February 2010

Panama City, Panama (Sports Network) - Fran Quinn managed just a one-over 71 Sunday, but it was enough for him to win the Panama Championship by two strokes.

Quinn, who picked up his fourth Nationwide Tour title, finished at 15-under- par 265. After smashing the 54-hole scoring record, Quinn also crushed the 72- hole scoring mark of 269, which Tripp Isenhour set in 2006.

"I made it interesting for everyone," said Quinn, who earned $99,000 for the win. "I've never had a big lead like that before and I just put it on cruise control instead of trying to keep making birdies."

Brian Smock closed with a three-under 67 at Panama Golf Club to take second place at 13-under-par 267. Tommy Gainey also shot 67 Sunday to finish alone in third at minus-10.

Quinn, who led by five shots entering the round, stumbled to a bogey on the second. He dropped another stroke on the par-four seventh, but was still comfortably ahead.

The 44-year-old ran off eight straight pars from the eighth. As he headed to the 16th, Quinn's lead had dipped to a single stroke.

"I started out and just striped it. I played really well the first seven holes, but missed four putts inside of six to eight feet," Quinn admitted. "I missed putts and duffed a chip on a par-five. I felt like I could have been four-under at that point, but was two-over."

Quinn birdied 16 to push his lead back to two and he sealed the win with a pair of pars.

Smock, who turns 37 on Monday, was even-par for his opening nine with a birdie, a bogey and seven pars. He started to make his move with a birdie on the par-four 11th.

He drained another birdie try on the 14th and got within one of Quinn with a birdie on the par-three 17th. He parred the last to end at 13-under.

Kevin Chappell carded a three-under 67 to finish at eight-under-par 272. He shared fourth place with D.J. Brigman (69), Julio Zapata (73) and Mark Anderson (72).

Brandt Jobe (67) headlined the group of seven players that tied for ninth at minus-seven. He was joined there by Kevin Kisner (72), Kent Jones (67), Luke List (69), Jonas Blixt (69), Kyle Stanley (67) and Chris Kirk (66).

NOTES: Scott Dunlap, the 2008 champion, stumbled to a seven-over 77 in the final round to fall into a share of 36th at minus-two...2007 winner Miguel Angel Carballo posted a one-over 71 to share 16th at minus-six...The Nationwide Tour heads to Colombia next week for a new event, the Pacific Rubiales Bogota Open.
