Summerhays takes 1-shot lead at Athens Classic

Sat 1st, May 2010

Athens, GA (Sports Network) - Daniel Summerhays shot a six-under 65 to take sole possession of the lead Saturday after three rounds of the Stadion Athens Classic.

Summerhays, who shared the second-round lead with two other players, finished 54 holes on the University of Georgia course at 13-under 200.

He took a one-shot lead over Martin Piller, who had a seven-under 64 to climb into second place alone at 12-under 201.

New Zealand's Bradley Iles was the only other player within five shots of the lead, carding a 65 to pull within two strokes of Summerhays at 11-under 202.

Bobby Gates, one of the second-round leaders, had a 71 and dropped six shots off the pace at seven-under 206.

Tee times for the third round were moved up several hours because of expected bad weather and players went off in threesomes from both the first and 10th tees.

Summerhays, 26, played without a bogey until the 18th hole, when he found trouble in the rough and dropped a shot. Chasing his second Nationwide Tour win -- but first as a professional -- he called Saturday "fantastic."

"It was probably one of my best rounds," said Summerhays. "I hit it pretty well and was rolling my putts perfectly. I had a lot of fun seeing my shots and being able to execute it, and that's why we play -- for days like that."

He made seven birdies in the round, including four in a row between the fifth and eighth holes. He made three further birdies on the back nine before the closing bogey.

Summerhays was the first amateur ever to win on the Nationwide Tour when he captured the 2007 Children's Hospital Invitational. It was only his second start on tour.

NOTES: Gates is the tour money leader...Mark Anderson, the other 36-hole leader, struggled to a three-over 74 and tumbled into a share of 15th place -- nine strokes back...Defending champion Patrick Sheehan fell 16 shots off the lead...No Nationwide Tour player has ever successfully defended a title.
