Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Australian Nick Flanagan carded a two-under 69 Saturday to grab a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational.
Flanagan, who won three times in 2007, completed 54 holes at seven-under-par 206. He is followed on the leaderboard by two of his countrymen.
Alistair Presnell managed a one-under 70 and shares second place at minus-six with Won Joon Lee (66).
Second-round leader Michael Putnam stumbled to a one-over 72 on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University Golf Club. He slipped into a tie for fourth place at five-under-par 208. He was joined there by Chris Nallen (68), 2007 winner Daniel Summerhays (69) and Keegan Bradley (68).
Flanagan, the 2003 U.S. Amateur champion, had a steady front nine with eight pars and a single birdie on the par-five sixth.
Around the turn, Flanagan ran home back-to-back birdie efforts from the 11th to grab a share of the lead at eight-under.
Flanagan parred his next two holes and took the lead as his playing partner, Presnell, bogeyed No. 14. Flanagan pushed his lead to three with a birdie on the 15th. Presnell bogeyed the same hole.
After a par on 16, Flanagan stumbled to a double-bogey at the 17th as his lead dipped to one.
"I've got a big gap between my three-iron and my four-iron and the three-iron really wasn't the club there," Flanagan explained of the 17th. "I tried to hit a low four-iron in there and got a little quick and came over the top of it. The bunker shot wasn't a very good bunker shot at all and then I three-putted from 40 feet. Two bad golf shots cost me two strokes."
He parred the last to maintain his one-shot cushion.
"I played really well today and if someone had said I could have had two-under starting the day I would have taken it," stated Flanagan.
Presnell wrapped birdies at the second and fourth around a bogey on three. A birdie at the seventh gave him a share of the lead. After Putnam bogeyed the ninth, Presnell birdied the 10th to go two clear.
The Australian bogeyed 11, but came back with a birdie on 12. He tumbled down the leaderboard with three bogeys in a four-hole span from the 14th. Presnell got one stroke back with a birdie at the last.
Lee had a steady climb up the leaderboard with six birdies in the first 13 holes to get to seven-under. He dropped a shot at the last to share second.
NOTES: Morgan Hoffman and Russell Henley were the only two amateurs to make the weekend out of 10 that started the week. Hoffman posted an even-par 71 to move up six spots into a share of 16th, while Henley struggled to a six-over 77 to slide into a tie for 48th after starting in a tie for sixth...With possible overnight and early morning storms, players will go off split tees in threesomes starting at 10:00 a.m. (et).
