Henley joins Guthrie in Cox Classic lead

Sat 4th, August 2012

Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - Russell Henley fired a 7-under 64 on Saturday to join Luke Guthrie in the lead after three rounds of the Cox Classic.

Guthrie fired a 63 to take the second-round lead, but managed an even-par 71 in round three. The duo finished 54 holes at 17-under-par 196.

Last week's winner Ben Kohles carded a 4-under 67 to move into a share of third place. He was joined there by Adam Hadwin (63) and Aaron Goldberg (66).

Jim Renner (67), Rob Oppenheim (69), Tag Ridings (71) and Brian Stuard (70) are tied for sixth at minus-14 at Champions Run.

Henley stumbled to a bogey on the second, but came back with an eagle on the fourth. He parred the next four holes before dropping in back-to-back birdie chances at nine and 10.

The 2011 Stadion Classic winner again made two birdies in a row at 13 and 14 to move within one of the lead. After Guthrie birdied the 10th, Henley got back within one thanks to a birdie on the 16th.

Henley made it two in a row as he birdied No. 17 to gain a share of the lead. He parred the last to end there.

"It's been a tough year. It can be lonely out here when you're not playing your best," Henley admitted. "It's not as much fun when you're struggling with your game and you don't know why you're struggling. It's a constant work in progress and my game's starting to feel really good."

Guthrie led entering the round, but fell back with bogeys on the fourth and seventh. He birdied the ninth just after Jim Herman bogeyed No. 13.

That 2-shot swing gave Guthrie at 2-shot lead over four players. Guthrie ran off six straight pars from No. 11. He birdied the 17th to briefly regain the lead by himself, but a 3-putt bogey at the last dropped him alongside Henley.

"All in all it was a struggle out there today - putting, long game, everything. My tempo wasn't the greatest all day," Guthrie explained. "I had a hard time putting the ball where I wanted to put it."

NOTES: The start of the third round was delayed 2 hours, 15 minutes by thunderstorms and high winds...Only one (Peter Lonard) of the top-33 players on the leaderboard was over par in round three...Guthrie has 22 birdies through three rounds, with 31 being the tour record for four rounds.
