Gomez hangs on to win in Mexico

Solidaridad, Mexico (Sports Network) - Argentina's Rafael Gomez captured his second Canadian Tour win Sunday at the Iberostar Riviera Maya Open despite closing with a four-over 76 in the final round.

Gomez finished at 12-under 276 for a one-shot victory over Mexico's Antonio Maldonado, who carded a one-under 71.

The 41-year-old winner double-bogeyed the 18th hole -- dropping his sixth and seventh shots of the final round. Gomez also collected three birdies to offset some of those mistakes.

His first tour win came at the Sport Frances Open in Chile last November.

Scott Gibson (70) took third place at eight-under 280 and John Douma (69) finished fourth at seven-under 281. Brock Mackenzie (67) and David Jackson (72) shared fifth place at 282.

Gomez carried a six-stroke lead over Maldonado into the final round and found trouble immediately. He bogeyed his first two holes, but recovered those shots with back-to-back birdies at the fourth and fifth.

Two more bogeys on the front nine -- at the eight and ninth -- put him two strokes over par for the round as he made the turn. Gomez collected another birdie at the 13th, then another bogey at the 15th.

His double-bogey at the 18th was just enough for the one-shot win over Maldonado.
