Canadian Tour to start season in Colombia

Oakville, ON (Sports Network) - The Canadian Tour announced on Friday that it will open its season next month at the Abierto Internacional de Golf II Copa Antioquia.

It will be a unique start to the season for the tour, as the event will be co- sanctioned by the European Challenge Tour and the Tour de las Americas. It will be the first time the three tours have joined together for a tournament.

The tournament, won by Sweden's Peter Gustafsson last year, will be contested at Club Campestre El Rodeo sede La Macarena in Rio Negro, Colombia from February 18-21.

"The Canadian Tour is very proud of our relationship with Tour de las Americas and those TLA players who have come to play the Canadian Tour," said Canadian Tour Commissioner Richard Janes. "The opportunity to meet the European Challenge Tour in competition is something that we have looked forward to for some time. This is the start of a relationship that will grow and create opportunities for years to come."

The 144-player field will be made up of 60 European Challenge Tour Members, 50 players from the TLA, 25 from the Canadian Tour 2009 Order of Merit and nine from Colombia.

"We are very pleased to return to South America and continue our relationship with the Tour de las Americas," stated Alain de Soultrait, Director of the Challenge Tour. "With golf due to be introduced to the Olympics in Rio in 2016 the game's popularity in the region is sure to grow even further in the coming years, and we are pleased to play our part in that process."
