Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Aaron Goldberg shot a six-under 65 to take the first-round lead Thursday at The Players Cup.
Goldberg had six birdies in a flawless round on the Pine Ridge course to build a one-stroke lead over Brady Stockton, Johnny Bloomfield, Brock Mackenzie and Vince Covello.
John Ellis, Devin Carrey, Benjamin Alvarado and Steve Saunders were two strokes further back at 68.
Goldberg, 24, is chasing his first career Canadian Tour win. He has three top-10 finishes this season, including a tie for second place at the Times Colonist Open last month.
His best shot of the day was a hybrid to five feet for a birdie at No. 9, a 231-yard uphill par-three.
"For a minute it looked like it had a chance of going in," said Goldberg. "You're happy to get out of there with par, so I'm obviously very pleased to steal a birdie."
NOTES: Goldberg has also made starts on the PGA and Nationwide Tours this season...Four of the six winners on the Canadian Tour this season are in the field. They are: Mackenzie, Andy Matthews (70), Will Wilcox (71) and Rob Grube (75)...Mackenzie tops the tour's money list...2009 champion Graham DeLaet is playing on the PGA Tour this season.
