PGA Tour-FEDEX St. Jude Classic 2011

Odds & News | MK ( Thu 9th, June 2011 )

On June 9 starts the PGA Tour- FEDEX St. Jude Classic and will be held in Memphis as usual

This will be the warming tournament for the U.S. Open. The event will reunite a group of top players preparing for the second major event of the year.

Lee Westwood will be defending his champion title acquired last year when he successfully made a five-foot birdie putt on the 4th playoff hole; defeating Robert Garrigus and Robert Karlsson in the process and capturing his second PGA title. Westwood became a top rank player this year; even without a major title on his career. He made 9 putts of over 15 feet and four over 25 feet at last year´s event; if he wants to succeed on St. Jude and the coming U.S. Open, he must keep his streak.

What is The PGA Tour Fedex importance for the players who want to get in the U.S. Open? Simple, on June 13 the top 50 players in the world will gain entry into this prestigious event; so everyone is preparing to get a spot, including three of the top-10 in the FedExCup, David Toms, Jonathan Byrd and Gary Woodland.

The real importance of this tournament is of a much higher concern. For a bit more than a half century, the PGA Tour FedEx St. Jude Classic has been an icon in Memphis Sports community, but much more for the St. Jude Children´s Hospital who is the beneficiary of the tournament charity. There was a time when finding sponsorship was so difficult; the tournament was on the edge of being lost, until FedEx took the sponsor mantle. The delivery company recently agreed in the last month to back up the event until 2014. The tournament has raised the charity to $25 million for St. Jude Children´s Hospital since 1970.

Lee Westwood should watch his title carefully; this year the competition is hard due to all the great players that are participating in the tournament.

David Toms is one of those; of the past nine years of this event, Toms has been in the top 5 six times that include back to back winnings in 2003-2004-2005 and 2009.

Brian Gay has three top 5´s in the last seven years and won in 2009. He has improved and has shown a solid golf in what we have of the current year.

Robert Garrigus may still haunt for that triple bogey on that awful 72nd hole last year during the game against Westwood and Karlsson. Garrigus came back to win the Children´s Miracle Network Classic at the end of 2010 and almost achieve the victory at Kapalua. Qualifying for the U.S. Open on Monday will have him in a good mood.

If you are planning to make some bets; having an eye on these four players could be a smart move. The first two rounds of the tournament will be transmitted by the Golf Channel and then will switch to CBS on weekend.
