Quigley fires 62 for 3M Championship lead

Blaine, MN (Sports Network) - Dana Quigley fired a course-record 10-under 62 Friday to grab a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the 3M Championship.

Quigley's 62 at TPC of the Twin Cities bested the old mark of 63, which Don Pooley shot in 2003 and Tom Purtzer matched in 2005.

Gene Jones is alone in second place at minus-eight, one stroke clear of Jeff Sluman and R.W. Eaks.

Loren Roberts, who earned his first win of the year two weeks ago at the Commerce Bank Championship, opened with a six-under 66. He was joined in a share of fifth place by Gary Hallberg, Ed Dougherty and John Harris.

Quigley two-putted for birdie on the par-five third and collected his second birdie on No. 5 from eight feet out. He then made a key par on the next hole.

"Every round has turning points. My up and down for par on the sixth was big," admitted Quigley.

He made the turn at minus-three thanks to a 20-foot birdie putt on the ninth. Around the turn, Quigley kept rolling. He birdied the 10th from 15 feet out and followed that with a 10-footer for birdie on 11.

Quigley holed out for eagle from 84 yards on the 12th and moved to minus-eight with a 12-foot birdie putt at the 13th.

After a par on 14, Quigley dropped his approach within three feet at the 15th. He tapped in for birdie and made it two straight with a 25-foot birdie effort at 16.

With a chance to close birdie-eagle and shoot 59, Quigley found a greenside bunker at the par-three 17th. He blasted to 10 feet, but two-putted for bogey. He got that shot back at the last with a 12-foot birdie putt.

"My putting has been awful for two years," said Quigley, who matched his career-low round on the Champions Tour. "I went to a belly putter about two months ago and that has helped."

Jones birdied the second, then dropped in back-to-back birdies from the sixth to move to minus-three.

Around the turn, Jones ran off three straight birdies from the 11th to jump to six-under. He drained a four-footer for birdie on 16 and closed with a two- putt birdie to finish two shots back at minus-eight.

"I played really good," said Jones, who has four top-10 finishes this year. "I knew things were good this morning when I went to the range. A very easy day and I'm looking forward to the next two days. It's been a good ride so far."

Jones' 64 was his best score on the Champions Tour, bettering the 65 he posted earlier this year at the ACE Group Classic.

Peter Jacobsen is playing for just the second time since mid-March. He opened with a five-under 67 and shares ninth with Bernhard Langer, who has won twice this year, and David Ogrin.

Defending champion D.A. Weibring is one stroke further back at minus-four.
