Scottsdale, AZ (Sports Network) - Steve Haskins fired a six-under 65 to take the second-round lead Wednesday at Champions Tour Q-School.
Haskins, a longtime Nationwide Tour player, finished two trips around the TPC Scottsdale at 11-under 131, giving him a two-shot lead over five players as the tournament reached its halfway mark.
First round co-leader Curt Byrum, a former PGA Tour winner, trailed by only a shot when he reached the 18th hole, but a closing bogey left him two back after a 68.
The Golf Channel commentator shared second place with Peter Senior (65), Jim Roy (65), John Ross (68) and Terry Burke (68) at nine-under 133. Ross and Burke shared first place with Byrum after the first round.
Ted Schulz (65) was alone in seventh place at eight-under 134.
The top five finishers at the end of the fourth round on Friday will earn full exemptions next year on the Champions Tour. The next seven players, Nos. 6-12, will receive conditional status for 2010.
Haskins collected all six of his birdies Wednesday during his first 12 holes. He has made only one bogey through two rounds -- at the par-five ninth during Tuesday's first round.
The 51-year-old journeyman has mostly played on the Nationwide Tour, where he captured a win at the 1991 New England Classic. Haskins also won the developmental tour's Ozarks Open in 2001, although that victory wasn't considered official because the tournament was rained out after just 36 holes.
His only start in the last four years ended with a tie for 22nd place at this season's U.S. Senior Open.
Haskins played 12 events on the Nationwide Tour in 2005, but made only one cut. He appeared 25 times on the Nationwide Tour in 2004, making just nine cuts.
