Lahaina, HI (Sports Network) - Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson won seven skins and $220,000 to take the nine-hole lead Saturday at the Champions Skins Game.
Nicklaus and Watson collected five skins and $150,000 when Watson rolled in a three-foot birdie putt on No. 5 at the Kaanapali course. They added another skin on No. 7 when Watson holed a 10-footer for birdie.
Overall, the leaders made five birdies during the round and took a commanding money lead over the other three teams with nine holes remaining on Sunday.
Fred Couples and Nick Price captured one skin when Price birdied No. 8 from 12 feet, earning them $40,000 for second place. Couples, 50, was making his Champions Tour debut at the unofficial event.
Defending champions Ben Crenshaw and Fuzzy Zoeller, who are trying to become the first team to win back-to-back Champions Skins Games, were shut out on Day 1.
Gary Player and Loren Roberts also failed to win a skin on Saturday.
After the first four holes were halved, Nicklaus gave his teammate a good opportunity to win $150,000 when he knocked his approach shot close at No. 5.
"He left me with a shaky three-foot putt and I made it," Watson said.
The birdie ended a skin-less streak for the duo, who were shut out of last year's event. But they weren't done. Nicklaus set up Watson again on No. 7, leaving his teammate with a 10-foot birdie putt that was converted for $70,000 more.
"We made a good team out there today," Watson said.
The teams will have a chance to win $80,000 on the 10th hole Sunday after the skin for No. 9 was halved with pars on Saturday. There will be a total of $510,000 up for grabs Sunday.
