Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Champions Tour golfer Jim Thorpe was sentenced to one year in prison on Friday for failing to pay income tax over a three- year span.
Thorpe, a 13-time winner on the Champions Tour, plead guilty in September to two counts of failing to pay income taxes. According to prosecutors, Thorpe has agreed to pay all taxes, interest and penalties owed to the IRS, a sum of over $2 million.
The 60-year-old Thorpe will also have to serve 200 hours community service and spend two years on supervised release.
Thorpe won five events and earned over $4.7 million on the course from 2002-2004, the time in which he is charged with not paying his taxes.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, in court on Friday, Thorpe admitted, "I've definitely made some mistakes. It was my fault."
U.S. Magistrate Judge Karla R. Spaulding heard several testimonials of how Thorpe helped others and volunteered for several charitable events. Those statements may have played a role in Thorpe's sentence being only one year as opposed to the two years he was facing for his actions.
