Boca Raton, FL (Sports Network) - Jay Haas and Tom Jenkins posted matching eight-under 64s Friday to share the lead after one round of the Allianz Championship.
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin and Mike Reid are one stroke back at minus- seven, while five players are two strokes off the pace on The Old Course at Broken Sound Club.
Loren Roberts carded a six-under 66 and was joined in a share of fifth place by Jim Roy, Tim Simpson, John Cook and Tom Lehman.
Haas played on the back nine first and dropped in back-to-back birdie efforts from the 12th. He made the turn in three-under after a birdie on the par-five 18th.
The 2007 runner-up caught fire around the turn. He birdied the first and made it three in a row after draining a birdie try on No. 2.
Haas capped a run of four straight birdies at the par-three third. After a par on four, Haas rolled in birdie efforts on five and six to join Jenkins in the lead. Haas parred the final three holes to finish at minus-eight.
"That was a little unexpected. I didn't play well last week," Haas admitted. "I was frustrated on the greens last week, but I putted today as well as I have in a long time. I hit a lot of good shots, but if you don't finish it off it doesn't do you any good."
Jenkins, whose last Champions Tour win came in 2006, got off to a steady start after parring five of the first six holes. He birdied the fourth, then collected his second birdie on No. 7.
He poured in three straight birdie chances from the ninth to jump to minus- five.
Jenkins birdied the next two par-threes, Nos. 14 and 16, to climb to seven- under. He birdied the last to finish alongside Haas.
"I had a putt at 17, and if I had made that and eagled 18, I would have shot my age," Jenkins said. "You know you're getting old when you start think about shooting your age. It was a solid round, but I missed a few putts early in the round that could have gone in."
Bernhard Langer opened with a five-under 67. He was joined in a share of 10th place by Scott Simpson, Tommy Armour III and Mark McNulty.
NOTES: Defending champion Mike Goodes posted a one-under 71 and is tied for 40th place...Mark James, the 2007 winner, is one stroke further back at even- par and stands alongside Champions Tour all-time wins leader Hale Irwin.
