Cook one ahead at Montreal Championship

Sat 3rd, July 2010

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - John Cook fired his second straight six-under 66 Saturday to grab a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the inaugural Montreal Championship.

Cook, a four-time winner on the Champions Tour, finished 36 holes at 12-under- par 132.

Russ Cochran, who shared the first-round lead with Tom Wargo, carded a four- under 68 and is alone in second at minus-11.

Fred Couples (66) and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin (67) are among eight players tied for third at nine-under-par 135. Pavin is the only player without a bogey through two rounds.

Wargo managed a one-under 71 to dip into a share of 11th at minus-eight at Club de Golf Fontainebleau.

Cochran opened with back-to-back birdies from the first to jump to minus-nine. However, he gave both those strokes back with a double-bogey on the par-three fourth.

The 51-year-old faltered to a bogey on the sixth to dip to minus-six.

Meanwhile, Cook was playing a flawless round. He opened with a 12-foot birdie putt on the second before making par on the next four holes. He jumped to nine-under with a four-foot eagle putt on the par-five seventh.

Cook turned in 10-under thanks to a birdie at the ninth.

Cochran was making a charge of his own. After his bogey on six, he poured in birdie efforts on the eighth and ninth. Around the turn, Cochran moved back to nine-under with a birdie on the 11th.

Cook birdied the par-three 13th and made it two in a row with a birdie on 14. Those birdies got him to 12-under and he remained there as he closed with fourth consecutive pars.

"I'm very pleased with my striking of the golf ball today," Cook said. "It was a bit of a stronger wind, so we had to pay attention. I hit some really quality shots when the wind was blowing its hardest, so it was nice to hit nice, crisp shots when the wind was blowing."

Cochran matched Cook's birdie on the par-five 14th, then moved within one shot of the lead with a birdie on the last.

"I had a pretty good putter the last couple days," Cochran stated. "Today I didn't have real good control of my golf ball. You're going to make a bogey or two, but I was real happy with the way I made some putts to get myself going again on eight and nine."

Couples and Pavin were joined in third place by Larry Mize (68), David Frost (68), Craig Stadler (65), D.A. Weibring (63), Peter Senior (68) and James Mason (69).

NOTES: This is a new event on the Champions Tour...Wargo and Cochran had set the course record Friday with their 65s, but Weibring bettered that by two strokes on Friday with his 63...That 63 also matched Weibring's career low round on the Champions Tour.
