Langer leads Price by one at Boeing Classic

Sun 29th, August 2010

Snoqualmie, WA (Sports Network) - Bernhard Langer fired a nine-under 63 in Saturday's second round to take a one-stroke lead at the Boeing Classic.

Langer, who has already won four times on the Champions Tour this season, completed 36 holes at 15-under-par 129.

The German's total of 129 bettered the old tournament 36-hole record by three strokes. David Eger, Morris Hatalsky and Craig Stadler set the original mark of 132 in 2005 and Don Pooley matched it the following year.

Langer's four wins this year include back-to-back major championship victories at the Senior British and U.S. Senior Opens.

Nick Price, who shot 63 in the opening round, closed with an eagle at the par- five 18th at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge to finish one back at minus-14.

Tom Pernice, Jr. is the only other player within eight strokes of Langer. Pernice posted a two-under 70 and is alone in third at 10-under-par 134.

Price was on top most of the round, but Langer passed him with a five birdies on the back nine. The duo matched early birdies at the first, fifth and seventh.

Langer moved within two of Price thanks to a birdie on the eighth, but Price responded with a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 9. Langer birdied the 10th to get back within two.

As Price ran off seven consecutive pars from the seventh, Langer cruised by the first-round leader.

Langer ran home a 12-foot birdie effort on the 12th. Two holes later, he poured in a 20-footer to join Price in the lead. Langer made it two in a row with a two-putt birdie on the 15th.

After a pair of pars, Langer got up and down for birdie from a greenside bunker at the last to get into the clubhouse at minus-15.

"I played solid and kept the ball in play," Langer said. "My short game was the key and I putted really well. My iron play has been very good this week too."

Price came up short of the green at the par-three 17th, and three-putted for bogey from the fairway short of the green. He bounced back with a 12-foot eagle putt on the par-five closing hole to get back within one of Langer.

"I played really well on the front nine. I think the greens firmed up and I got a little cagey with my irons," Price said of the back nine. "It got harder as the day progressed. I knew I had to at least make birdie at the last after I saw where Bernhard was."

Keith Fergus (67) and Hal Sutton (72) share fourth place at six-under-par 138.

NOTES: With Langer chasing his fifth win of the season, the last player to win five times in one year was Craig Stadler, who won five titles in 2004...Langer has won eight of the 10 times he has held the Saturday lead on the Champions Tour...Local favorite Fred Couples dropped four shots in a three-hole span from the 15th to slide back to four-under-par 140, which left him tied for ninth...Defending champion Loren Roberts (71) shares sixth at minus-five.
