Calcavecchia leads First Tee Open by two

Fri 3rd, September 2010

Pebble Beach, CA (Sports Network) - Mark Calcavecchia fired an eight-under 64 Friday to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the First Tee Open.

Calcavecchia fired his 64 at Del Monte Golf Course, which is one of two courses used for the first two rounds. The other course, Pebble Beach, will host the final round on Sunday.

"We got the course in the morning, which might have better scores," stated Calcavecchia of Del Monte. "I'm glad to shoot a great score today."

Tom Pernice, Jr. carded a six-under 66 and is alone in second place.

Fred Couples, who is second on the Champions Tour money list, shares third place at minus-five. He is joined there by Scott Simpson, Bob Tway, Chip Beck, Tom Kite, Olin Browne and Wayne Levi.

Calcavecchia started on the back nine at Del Monte and notched his first birdie on the 11th, where he converted a 15-footer. He ran off three straight birdies from the 15th to jump to minus-four.

At 15, he rolled in a six-foot birdie effort, then poured in a 20-footer on 16. Calcavecchia got up and down for birdie on 17 from a greenside bunker.

Around the turn, Calcavecchia birdied the first and second. After a par on the third, he got to seven-under thanks to a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-three fourth.

Calcavecchia then parred four in a row. At the par-five ninth, his last, he two-putted for his final birdie to cap a bogey-free round.

"Overall, I drove it good. The fairways are pretty small at Del Monte, but I think I hit seven of them," Calcavecchia stated. "It is a tricky little course. If you miss some greens, you are going to make some bogeys real fast."

Pernice, who spent most of his time on the PGA Tour this year, birdied the first four holes to jump up the leaderboard.

After a par on No. 5, Pernice birdied the sixth then ran off 10 consecutive pars from the seventh.

His par run ended with a birdie on the par-three 17th. Pernice parred the last to end two back.

NOTES: Two-time defending champion Jeff Sluman carded a four-under 68 and is tied for 10th...There was a 45-minute fog delay at the start of the round at Del Monte...This is Calcavecchia's first first-round lead on the Champions Tour.
