Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Sports Network) - Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat eagled his 14th hole to take a one-shot lead at the Malaysian Open just before the second round was suspended due to darkness.
Aphibarnrat moved to nine-under par with his eagle at No. 5 on the Kuala Lumpur course, surging ahead of Spain's Alejandro Canizares for a tentative lead.
The 20-year-old Thai golfer and 57 other players will return to the course at 7:45 a.m. local time Saturday (6:45 p.m. et on Friday) to complete the second round.
It has been a stop-and-start tournament so far.
The first round was completed in the morning after it was suspended Thursday due to a thunderstorm. But more weather problems loomed, and lightning forced a delay during the second round.
Play resumed once more, but was eventually suspended when it became too dark.
Canizares shot a three-under 69 in his second round to take the clubhouse lead at eight-under 136. The leaderboard is bunched up behind him, with six players at seven-under par.
Denmark's Soren Hansen and Angelo Que of the Philippines both fired round of five-under 67 to reach the clubhouse at seven-under 137.
Meanwhile, PGA Tour standout K.J. Choi leads a group of four players who were on the course at seven-under when play was suspended.
Aphibarnrat, No. 231 in the world rankings, chipped in from 30 yards for his eagle at the fifth hole, taking the lead in timely fashion before the end of the day.
"I'm very happy with that eagle," he said. "It wasn't quite dark and one of my [playing partners] wanted to stop but I wanted to continue and chipped in. Finishing with an eagle was great."
Canizares, ranked even lower than Aphibarnrat at world No. 442, birdied his 17th hole to reach eight-under and then secured the clubhouse lead with a par. He was soon replaced at the top of the leaderboard by Aphibarnrat.
"It has been a couple of years since I have really been in contention," said the 2006 Russian Open champion, "so hopefully I can still remember how to play when I am up there over the weekend and stay relaxed."
NOTES: Choi is through 16 holes...Also at seven-under are Ignacio Garrido (16 holes), Rhys Davies (11) and Kim Dae-Hyun (9)...Defending champion Anthony Kang of the U.S. shot a 71 and finished two rounds at even-par 144...The projected cut line stands at one-over par.
