Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Sports Network) - Rhys Davies carded a one-under 71 Saturday and Kiradech Aphibarnrat shot four-under 68 as the two share the lead after three rounds of the Malaysian Open.
Davies and Aphibarnrat completed 54 holes at 11-under-par 205. They will both go for their first European Tour title on Sunday.
K.J. Choi, Soren Hansen and two-time winner Thongchai Jaidee all posted rounds of three-under 69 to move into a share of third at minus-10. They were joined there by Seung-yul Noh, whose 67 was the second-best score of the third round.
The second round was completed earlier Saturday after storms halted play each of the first two days.
Davies was in control throughout the front nine, but trouble around the turn brought the field back into it. He birdied Nos. 3 and 5, both par-fives, to move to 12-under. He led by two at that point, but his lead dipped to one as he parred the next five holes.
Around the turn, the Welshman stumbled to a double-bogey on the par-five 10th as his tee shot found a water hazard. That mistake dropped him one behind Choi. Davies remained at 10-under as he parred the next six holes at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
Aphibarnrat dropped in back-to-back birdies from the second, but gave a stroke back on the sixth. He atoned for that mistake with a birdie on No. 8, but faltered to another bogey at the 11th to slip to minus-eight.
The 20-year-old from Thailand caught fire down the stretch. He birdied three of the last four holes, including a near hole-in-one on the 15th, to get into the clubhouse first at 11-under.
"My ball striking has been improving and that has played a part in my good performance. I missed a couple of putts on the back nine, but I'm happy with the way I finished," Aphibarnrat stated.
Before Aphibarnrat had finished play, Davies had birdied the par-four 17th to move to 11-under. Aphibarnrat birdied the last to grab a piece of the lead and they remained tied when Davies parred the par-five closing hole.
"When you are playing well and making birdies, you don't feel so tired, but when a double-bogey comes along, you feel pretty shattered," Davies admitted. "It's good pressure. If I shoot the best score tomorrow, then I win. That's a good thing. There are a number of great players up there, so it is up to me to worry about my own game and try not to worry about them."
Johan Edfors (69) and Alejandro Canizares (71) share seventh place at nine- under-par 207. Spain's Ignacio Garrido was one stroke further back at minus- eight after carding a one-under 71 in the third round.
NOTES: Defending champion Anthony Kang shot even-par 72 and is tied for 44th at even-par 216 after three rounds...Among those tied with Kang is two-time champion Arjun Atwal...With lengthy weather delays over the first two days, 11 players withdrew and two more were disqualified prior to the end of round two.
