Pete Dye gets Hall of Fame nod

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (Sports Network) - Famed golf course architect Pete Dye will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame this November, it was announced on Tuesday.

Dye was elected in the Lifetime Achievement Category and he found out Tuesday at The Players Championship, which is staged at one of his most famous venues, the Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass.

"I am surprised and extremely honored to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame and to be included with those who have contributed to the game I love," said Dye.

Dye's courses have hosted major championships, PGA Tour and LPGA Tour events, Ryder Cups and Solheim Cups. Among his most notable are Harbour Town Golf Links (with Jack Nicklaus), Crooked Stick, PGA West at LaQuinta, Whistling Straits and the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.

"Pete's impact as a modern golf course designer is indisputable," said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. "His designs are fixtures on the PGA Tour schedule as they present the world's best players a challenging, yet fair test of golf and often help provide drama to our tournaments."

Dye joins a select group of architects in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Alastair MacKenzie, Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones, Sr. are some notable golf course architects already enshrined.

Dye will be formally inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2008 on November 10, 2008. The remainder of the Class will be announced at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines and the British Open at Royal Birkdale.
