Tiger gets Ryder Cup nod

Tue 7th, September 2010

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Tiger Woods received one of Corey Pavin's four captain's picks on Tuesday and will play for the U.S. in this year's Ryder Cup.

"I'm part of a team and honored to be part of that team," said Woods. "I always loved playing the Ryder Cup. I've been looking forward to it. I'm honored to be selected."

Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink and Rickie Fowler were Pavin's three other picks to round out the American side.

Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan, Jeff Overton, Matt Kuchar, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson made the team on points after the PGA Championship last month.

"I'm very pleased to add these four to Team USA. My job is to put together the best team to represent the United States in the Ryder Cup," said Pavin. "I'm trying to get the best guys to win."

Woods failed to qualify for the team on points for the first time since he turned professional. He's mired in his worst season as a professional thanks in part to the problems in his personal life.

Despite his issues and no victories in 2010, Woods is still the No. 1 ranked player in the world. He tied for fourth at both the Masters and U.S. Open, but went into a slump that included his highest score as a professional and worst finish in an event he played 72 holes at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods, who missed the 2008 Ryder Cup while recovering from knee surgery, posted a pair of top-12 finishes in the last two weeks.

"Things are starting to transition," said Woods. "I feel my game is coming around. I've played much better."

This will be Woods' sixth Ryder Cup and he has a 10-13-2 record, although his singles record is 3-1-1.

Johnson won this year at Colonial and tied for third at the PGA Championship. Those were his only top-10 finishes of the season and he's only played in one Ryder Cup. Johnson went 1-2-1 at the 2006 Ryder Cup in Ireland.

Cink has played in the last four Ryder Cups and was a captain's pick on Tuesday for the third time. His record is 4-7-4, but he has never lost a four- ball match.

After two top 10s in his first four events this year, Cink has only one since and that came at the Memorial in early June. He's finished inside the top 20 in his last four starts.

Fowler is a Ryder Cup rookie, but has five top 10s in 2010, including a pair of runner-up finishes at the Phoenix Open and Memorial. Fowler, without any status on the PGA Tour in 2009, lost a playoff at that year's Frys.com Open and at 21, he will be the youngest member of the team.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," said Fowler, a PGA Tour rookie. "I can bring some youth to the team and hopefully get the guys pumped up. I can bring some energy."

Fowler was probably the most questionable pick with his youth and inexperience, but he has a spectacular record at the Walker Cup, the amateur equivalent of the Ryder Cup. Fowler didn't lose in eight matches.

"It came down to feelings. I have a gut feeling about Rickie," said Pavin. "He's a very good player. Rickie is my choice. Difficult thing, but this was my choice."

Among those who were under consideration for a pick, but ultimately came up short were J.B. Holmes, Anthony Kim and Lucas Glover. Kim and Glover were both qualified for the team on points until the PGA Championship.

"There were a lot of guys in the mix," said Pavin. "There were a lot of guys I was looking at."

Charley Hoffman won the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday and Pavin acknowledged he vaulted into consideration.

"He jumped on the radar last night," Pavin admitted. "We looked at him."

The European team was finalized two weeks ago with Captain Colin Montgomerie adding Padraig Harrington, Edoardo Molinari and Luke Donald to his automatic nine qualifiers.

Lee Westwood, U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell, PGA Champion Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson, Francesco Molinari and Miguel Angel Jimenez made the European side on points.

The Ryder Cup tees off October 1 at Celtic Manor in Wales. The U.S. snapped a winless drought two years ago at Valhalla.
