Shoal Creek, AL (Sports Network) - Jorge Fernandez Valdes, a 15-year-old from Argentina, fired a seven-under 65 on Monday to take the lead after the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Fernandez Valdes collected 10 birdies at Shoal Creek Golf Course to take a three-shot lead. He experienced only a couple of hiccups along the way -- a bogey at the par-three fifth and a double-bogey at the par-four seventh.
The young Argentine shares a hometown with another golfing standout: 2007 U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera.
"I know the family and I am good friends with his sons," said Fernandez Valdes. "I have played golf with Cabrera twice. I want to be a professional, but first I want to attend college."
He held a three-stroke advantage on Seth Reeves, who opened with a four-under 68 to stand alone in second place.
Defending champion Cory Whitsett shared third place with Patrick Rodgers, Cameron Peck, Dashiell Lindsell and Julian Suri at three-under 69. Cody Gribble and Sam Smith were the only other players within five shots of Fernandez Valdes at two-under 70.
The championship continues with the second round of match play on Tuesday, followed by four days of match play ending in the 36-hole final on Saturday.
