Savannah, GA (Sports Network) - Elyse Smidinger shot an even-par 72 Wednesday to help Maryland keep the lead after two rounds of the Women's State Team Championship.
Smidinger, who made eight consecutive birdies during a first-round 68 on Tuesday, has Maryland on the cusp of its first title at the USGA championship.
Lisa Schlesinger chipped in with an 81 to give Maryland a nine-over 153 for the round and a 36-hole total of eight-over 296, which was good for a one-shot lead over Texas.
Maryland's third player, Andrea Kraus, shot an 11-over 83 that was discarded as her team's worst score.
Anna Schultz had a 75 and Mina Hardin shot a 76 to give Texas a seven-over 151 for the round and a nine-over 297 total. Tennessee was another stroke further back at 10-over 298 while defending champion Georgia was fourth at 11-over 299.
The third and final round will take place Thursday at The Landings Club's Palmetto Course.
Georgia is the only state in the eight years of this competition to win twice, having also captured the title in 2005.
