Georgia first to repeat at Women's State Am

Thu 6th, October 2011

Savannah, GA (Sports Network) - Rachel Dai shot an even-par 72 on Thursday to help Georgia become the first state to win back-to-back titles at the Women's State Team Championship.

Dai and Laura Coble (77) teamed for a five-over 149 on Thursday at The Landings Club's Palmetto Course to help Georgia post a 16-over 448 overall, two shots better than Tennessee and Texas, which both finished at 18-over.

Georgia is not only the first state to repeat -- in its home state, no less -- but it remained the only state to win this championship more than once, recording three titles altogether.

"It's just unbelievable," said the 47-year-old Coble. "It's just hard to describe. The Landings has been so wonderful to us. [Georgia] is my home and where I've grown up, and they've been wonderful to us."

Dai finished as the individual champion, too, shooting a two-under 214 overall to best Tennessee's Calle Nielsen, who finished at minus-one. The pair were the only two players to shoot better than three-over for 54 holes.

Maryland, which led after each of the first two rounds, tripped to an 11-over 155 with Andrea Kraus' four-over 76 and Elyse Smidinger's seven-over 79. Lisa Schlesinger, whose score was used in the first two days, had her score of 14- over 86 discarded on Thursday as the team's worst score.

Behind Maryland in fifth was Mississippi, which totaled 24-over 456, while Florida (458), New Jersey (461), Hawaii (466), Minnesota (467) and New York (467) rounded out the top 10.
