Holtgrieve to captain U.S. Walker Cup team again

Far Hills, NJ (Sports Network) - Jim Holtgrieve has been named captain of the U.S. Walker Cup team again, the second straight time he will serve in that role.

Holtgrieve captained this year's team, though the Americans fell to Great Britain and Ireland in September.

He will serve as captain again for the 2013 Walker Cup, scheduled to take place at National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York.

"I am indeed honored once again to be named the captain of the 2013 United States Walker Cup team," said Holtgrieve. "The 2011 Walker Cup journey was an incredible experience for me and one that I will never forget."

Holtgrieve played on Walker Cup-winning teams in 1979, 1981 and 1983 and has an extensive amateur record, including a semifinal appearance at the 1980 U.S. Amateur and a runner-up finish at the 1983 British Amateur. He also played on the Champions Tour from 1999 to 2005.

"I want to bring the Walker Cup back to the United States, but I also want to lead 10 men to have one of the best golfing experiences they can ever imagine," Holtgrieve said. "I thought I understood the true spirit of the game. However, the Walker Cup in Scotland proved so much more to me about the real meaning."

The Walker Cup Match is played every two years between two teams of 10 amateurs from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. It consists of 18 singles matches and eight foursomes matches over two days.

In 2011, GB&I won, 14-12, over the U.S., which has dominated the all-time series, 34-8-1.
