UNC a unanimous No. 1; Syracuse, Baylor enter poll

Mon 1st, December 2008

New York, NY (Sports Network) - North Carolina was again a unanimous pick as the top-ranked college basketball team in the country, according to the latest Associated Press poll released Monday.

The Tar Heels (7-0), coming off a title at last week's Maui Invitational, again received all 72 first-place votes and a total of 1,800 points from a nationwide media panel.

Connecticut kept the number two slot, but there were plenty of changes from there.

Pittsburgh moved up a spot to third, while Duke vaulted three spots to fourth and Gonzaga jumped four spots to fifth. Oklahoma, coming off a title at the NIT Season Tip-off, made the biggest jump within the poll, leaping five spots from 11th to sixth.

Notre Dame, Texas, Purdue and Tennessee complete the top 10.

The second 10 consists of Louisville, UCLA, Michigan State, Xavier, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Villanova, Memphis, Arizona State and Georgetown.

Louisville dropped eight spots from third after a loss to Western Kentucky over the weekend, while Michigan State also fell eight spots from fifth after losing to Maryland in the Old Spice Classic.

Syracuse went from unranked to 16th after impressive victories over the last two national champions -- Florida and Kansas -- last week in Kansas City.

The last five teams ranked are Miami-Florida, Davidson, Florida, Baylor and Marquette.

Baylor joined the rankings with a strong showing in Anaheim that featured a victory over Arizona State and a loss to unbeaten Wake Forest. Marquette nearly fell out of the rankings, plummeting 10 spots from 15th to 25th, after a loss to Dayton.

Kansas, following its loss to Syracuse, and Wisconsin, after a loss to Connecticut in the final of the Paradise Jam, dropped out of the poll.

This week's top games include a top-10 matchup between Duke and Purdue as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday and Wednesday's tussle between North Carolina and Michigan State. On Thursday, UCLA will visit Texas.
