On Wednesday night, Martin Brodeur reached another record, by tying Patrick Roy for the most regular season games played as a goalie. Patrik Elias helped the Devils win so Brodeur could enjoy this.
Elias thumped at a rebound with 2:36 left in the 3rd period to give the New Jersey Devils a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Brodeur finished with 17 saves, and tied Roy as he stepped on the ice for his 1029th game. Roy retired after the 2002-03 season. Referring to Brodeur, Elias said, "He carries us, even when we do not have those enormous games. He provides us a winning opportunity every game."
After Brian Rolston's shot from beyond the circles was stopped by Canadiens goalie Carey Price, Elias skated past everybody, snagged and backhanded the puck inside the right post. Elias, has 4 goals in his last 4 games and 16 points in 18 games since his return from a groin surgery on November 6th. He admits that he has felt pretty good this past week.
He said, "The last 4 or 5 games, I have felt pretty good. My leg isn't hurting that much and I am doing more conditioning to get my endurance a bit higher. I am working out and riding a bike to build up endurance, speed and stamina which seems to be working."
Canadiens goalie, Price said, "I know that they crash the net well and he got some wood on his shot. I tried to get to the corner but I didn't get far enough and he put it right there. The good teams get to the net and score goals, and that is what Elias did."
The star of the game was Elias; in fact he beat Tomas Plekanec on the play to put himself in position for the game winner. Elias said, "Their Defenseman sort of measured down and that left me alone. I was screaming beyond my lungs the whole time when Rolston had the puck as I was trying to help him and set up a little give and go." Elias and Rolston have discovered fine chemistry and well with rookie Vladimir Zharkov.
Rolston said, "We have good chemistry. We are always looking for each other all the time and we are making plays so it is a lot of fun. He makes this really simple on me; hopefully, I am making this simple for him."
Brodeur will get the chance to break the most games played record as well as get another shot at most career shutouts Friday night vs. Ottawa. Brodeur tied Terry Sawchuk's record of 103 career shutouts on December 7th when he blanked the Buffalo Sabres 3-0. Brodeur has started the last 11 games for New Jersey and played all but one period in the last eighteen.
