Martin Brodeur helps Canada to a 3-2 shootout victory over Switzerland

Odds & News | Webmaster ( Tue 23rd, February 2010 )

Did somebody say goalie controversy?

Here is the controversy, find somebody left who still doubts 37 year old Martin Brodeur, the Devils' goalie who played a near perfect game for Canada on Thursday night. Whom before stonewalling the Swiss in a shootout, had his whole country holding its breathe.

After Sidney Crosby wristed one home for Canada on the fourth shootout attempt against a valiant Jonas Hiller, Brodeur had the same scenario for Canada, to stop Martin Pluss' wrist shot to protect a 3-2 victory over Switzerland in the second round of the Olympic hockey event.

Along with the rest of the nation, we still wonder how Canada's goalie rotation will shake out. Brodeur gave a sterling performance with 21 saves and yielding 4 goals, which weren't his fault.

Mike Babcock, the Canada coach said, "You have to respond to pressure and situation, and I believe Marty did this," as he declared that he would start Brodeur again on Sunday against the U.S. "His reaction was wonderful."

Hiller - A young goalie who just won the starting job with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, was in fact better, because he saved 46 shots and faced Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf and Jonathan Toews during the shootout. However, Brodeur outdueled him, and finally Crosby broke through slamming one under Hiller's stick to make the Canada Hockey Place tremble.

Crosby said, "I was fortunate to get a second crack, so I made the best of this." Brodeur talked about Canada's missed scoring opportunities saying, "Misfortune is a big thing. With superstars, you sometimes do not get this expression."

Alternatively, as Crosby put it, "We didn't expect an easy game and we didn't get one." Still, it was Brodeur's win to savor because Roberto Luongo, Vancouver's favorite son, opened the Olympics with a strong performance vs. Norway, and reports said that a slip up from Brodeur could turn into being a permanent backup.

Certainly, he remains the greatest goalie of all time, but with Canada frantic for the gold medal in these Olympic Games, it's no time to be sentimental or nostalgic.

Brodeur, who was pulled from the Devils' game last week (just like Luongo), attempted to downplay any controversy.

He said, "It is important that you keep both guys alive it the competition. Injuries, numerous things occur. It is a short tournament, a quick rotation. Sensitively, goalies, we are fragile. In case you go out and you only put one guy aside and say, 'Well, it is not happening,' it is a bad situation."

"The other goalie needs to be fresh and ready mentally so he can jump in there."
