The NHL National Hockey League is the organization in-charge of professional ice hockey league between United States and Canada

this league exist since 1917 in Montreal, the league start with four teams from Canada and after being growing along the years have become in a thirty franchised league, this tournament has the oldest trophy in North America Stanley Cup, but still NHL is not taken as a big as league like NFL, NBA or MLB.

One of the goals for NHL is to make more popular the sport with the purpose to increase the economy of the game as other sports I mentioned before, for example, to increase the demand of hockey games tickets and all hockey related also to make more people to be interest on the game and participate of it.

Expansion of teams and league

When NHL began the league has only 4 teams, now are 30 clubs, are 24 of the United States and 6 from Canada fighting for get in playoffs of each season to win the famous Stanley Cup. Montreal Canadians are the most successful team of the league with 24 Stanley Cups with it's name, in major sports this team is the second more successful team with more major trophies just behind of New York Yankees with 27.

Another important names in hockey are Toronto Maple Leaf with 13 tittles and Detroit Red Wings with 11, of all the leagues in North America this is the only one that is played in two countries and in it's capitals (Washington D.C and Ottawa), the league divide the teams in two groups the western and the eastern conference.

The NHL has passed for several steps to become what is right now, today is one of the four major league tournaments on North America, has come from the bottom to the top and keep growing, the NHL maybe does not have the more quantity of base fans but it really has some of the loyal fans of the sports for example Maple Leafs fans no matter how is their team they always support is, so it's a sport that is going up in popularity.
