Leafs and Lightning square off in Toronto

Tue 1st, January 2008

(Sports Network) - A pair of struggling teams will try to turn things around on New Year's Day, as the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at Air Canada Centre.

The Lightning have dropped four in a row, five of six and seven of their last eight contests. Tampa Bay is now last in the Eastern Conference with just 33 points on the year.

As for Toronto, the club has lost three consecutive tests and has been defeated in six of its last seven trips to the ice. The Leafs are currently last in the Northeast Division with 38 points.

The Maple Leafs are coming off Saturday's embarrassing loss to the visiting New York Rangers. Jaromir Jagr registered a goal and three assists to lead the Rangers to a 6-1 romp at Air Canada Centre.

Darcy Tucker scored the Maple Leafs, who were playing their first home game since December 10, following a 2-4-1 road trip.

Andrew Raycroft took the loss by allowing five goals in just over 30 minutes of work. Scott Clemmensen finished the game by allowing one goal on five shots.

The Leafs have been without starting goaltender Vesa Toskala for the past three games as the Finnish backstop continues to battle a groin injury. He is questionable for tonight's contest.

Toronto, which is 7-7-5 as the host this year, is wrapping up a brief two-game homestand this evening. After tonight, the Leafs will play four of their next five games on the road.

The Lightning's latest setback came Saturday night against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. Joffrey Lupul had a goal and two assists as the Flyers posted the 4-2 decision at St. Pete Times Forum.

Vincent Lecavalier and Vinny Prospal scored for the Lightning, who have also lost nine of their last 11 contest. Karri Ramo made 18 saves in the losing effort.

The Lightning are just 3-13-1 as the road club this year and have dropped seven of their last eight tests away from Tampa.

Toronto and Tampa have split a pair of meetings this year, but the Leafs have taken seven of 10 in the series. The Lightning have also dropped five straight and 10 of their last 11 tilts in Toronto.
